Woody Ornamental Plant Identification Course
SUMMER 2010
An opportunity for Horticulture professionals/students to refresh their plant identification and plant characteristic knowledge in a field setting. Each week the class will meet at various locations: Tower Grove Park, Forest Park, Bellefontaine Cemetery and a Natural Area (locations subject to change). Information will cover evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs and vines.
Course is composed of 4 meetings. Classes meet in the evening at 6pm once a week. Classes usually last until dusk.
Two courses are being offered. A Wednesday night class or a Thursday night class. You need to choose one.
Classes START of June 6/23 or 6/24. Last class will be July 14th or July 15th. If we have a BAD rain day there will be a makeup the following week July 21th/22th
Information covered: Scientific and common names, plant traits (flowering, size, cultivars, growing environment, etc), design possibilities, potential problems (pest and diseases) and any other relevant or irrelevant information that comes to mind.
Certified Arborist receives 8 CEU’s for the course. (2 CEU’s per week)

Master Gardener Continuing Education hours
Cost of the course is $50.00 per person.
Course presented by Dan Billman, Associate Professor Horticulture – St. Louis Community College-Meramec. This course is NOT a Community college course. FIRST CLASS will meet at Tower Grove Park (Southeast of the Botanical Garden). Use the entrance at the corner of Magnolia Ave and Tower Grove Ave. We will meet at the South side of Water Feature/Pond in front of the Palm house (appr. 100 yards into the park). Other information will be provided at the first meeting.
If you’ve taken it previously, new areas in the parks and new plants will be covered.
