The Shaw Professional Landscaping Series Mini-workshop and Garden Dinner at Shaw Nature Reserve Keynote speaker is acclaimed landscape architect Fred Rozumalski
Fred Rozumalski, RLA, a registered landscape architect, is experienced in the areas of landscape architecture, ecology, horticulture, and native landscape design and restoration. His projects are designed to work with nature to create economically viable, low-maintenance landscapes that support a diversity of plants and animals, and most importantly, are designed to meet the needs of the people who inhabit them. In addition to lecturing on ecologically sound landscape design, Fred has completed numerous wetland, woodland, and lakeshore restoration projects. His most recent accomplishments include co- authoring a Minnesota DNR-sponsored book, Lakescaping for Wildlife and Water Quality, and winning a National Design Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects Professional Awards for the innovative design of a sedge meadow restoration and interpretive boardwalk at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Fred also led the team at Barr Engineering that wrote the Minnesota Urban Small Sites Best Management Practices Manual for storm water management in cold climates.
ASLA Chapter Presidents Council 2012
Each year, presidents, president-elects, and trustees of ASLA Chapters across the country gather in Washington DC to advocate for the landscape architecture profession. This year, advocates met on May 9 through May 12 to educate their representatives and senators about landscape architecture as a profession, how it impacts communities, and its economic impact on business.
This year our advocates included Hunter Beckham – Trustee, Susan Maag – President, and Andrew Kilmer – President Elect. On May 10, the advocates urged their representatives to co-sponsor HB 2030 and S1115 – Green Infrastructure for Clean Water Act and to support Transportation Reauthorization which includes Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to Schools, Recreation Trails, and National Scenic Byways.
The day began with a breakfast session with Senator Claire McCaskill and was followed by a lengthy discussion with her staff. Advocates later met with staff members of Senator Roy Blunt, Representative Todd Akin, and Representative Russ Carnahan. All of the senators and representatives expressed concern over budgets and employment. Each office left us with an open invitation to visit their district offices to share additional information about the bills ASLA would like them to support .
Meeting with our representatives was an exciting privilege for the St. Louis Chapter advocates. Advocacy is a fantastic opportunity to educate our public officials about landscape architecture as a profession and advance our profession for current and future landscape architects. Thanks to our St. Louis Chapter ASLA for supporting our advocacy efforts!
