AWARDS CALL FOR ENTRIES
American Society of Landscape Architects

ENTRANT ELIGIBILITY
Any individual, firm, agency or academic institution is eligible to enter, as long as one of the project�s main participants meets at least one of the following classifications:
1.  Iowa, Great Plains, Prairie Gateway, Oklahoma, and St. Louis Chapters of ASLA Fellows, Members, Associates, Affiliates.
2.  Landscape Architect registered in a state associated with a participating Chapter.
3.  Graduate of an accredited landscape architecture degree program.
4.  Non-Landscape Architect submitting in the Research and Communication category.
5.  A student currently enrolled in a Landscape Architecture curriculum, or a student who graduated in the spring of 2005 at a university in a state associated with a participating Chapter.

In addition, any project submitted for the Awards Program must meet at least one of the following classifications:
1. Project is located within a state associated with a participating Chapter.
Individual or firm submitting the project is located within a state associated with a participating Chapter.
2. Individuals and firms located in a state associated with a participating Chapter may enter work done outside that state.

AWARDS:
Excellence Award: 
The highest award given to one Honor
Award recipient.

Honor Award
:  The highest award in each category.

Merit Award
:  An award of recognition of superior professional accomplishment.

Multiple awards may be given in each category at the discretion of the jury.  The jury reserves the right not to make an award in any or all of the categories.

JURY
This year�s submissions will be judged by a panel of architects, landscape architects, planners and artists from the Connecticut Chapter.

PRESENTATION OF AWARDS:
Awards will be presented at the Awards Celebration in April, 2008.  The Celebration will be held at the EPNEC Center in St. Louis MO.

ENTRY CATEGORIES
The discipline of Landscape Architecture encompasses many diverse categories.  The judging for the Awards Program will recognize outstanding design solutions in these categories for projects within and out of the States of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.  Large incremental projects must have completed at least the first phase to be eligible for entry.  In this case, the first phase must be representative of the entire project and will be judged by the same criteria as other entries in the category.  Each entry will be submitted and judged under one (only) of the following categories:

Category I.  DESIGN (BUILT)
Category I recognizes:
-Construction site-specific works of landscape architectural design (including urban design). For large incremental projects, at least the first stage must be completed to be eligible for an award.
-Design entries should exhibit a relationship to planning and a framework for larger than the immediate site.
-Typical entries in this category may include: communities and housing; urban design, streets and public spaces; parks and recreational facilities; transportation corridors and facilities; residences and gardens; commercial facilities; resorts; institutions; historic preservation and restoration; reclamation and conservation; landscape art and earth sculpture; interior landscapes.

Main Criteria for Judging Design (Built)
1. Quality of design;
2. Functionalism;
3. Relationship to context;
4. Environmental responsibility;
5. Relevance to the profession, the public and the environment.

Category II.  DESIGN (Unbuilt)
Category II recognizes:
-Un-realized works of landscape architectural design (including urban design).
-Design entries should exhibit a relationship to planning and a framework for an area larger than the immediate site.
-Typical entries in this category may include: communities and housing; urban design, streets and public spaces; parks and recreational facilities; transportation corridors and facilities; residences and gardens; commercial facilities; resorts; institutions; historic preservation and restoration; reclamation and conservation; landscape art and earth sculpture; interior landscapes.

Main Criteria for Judging Design (Unbuilt)
1. Quality of design;
2. Functionalism;
3. Relationship to context;
4. Environmental responsibility;
5. Relevance to the profession, the public and the environment.

Category III.  PLANNING AND ANALYSIS
Category III recognizes:
-The wide variety of professional activities that lead to, guide or evaluate landscape architectural design.
-Typical entries in this category may include: general development, regional, transportation, recreation or town plans; urban planning, government policies or programs; legislation or regulations; landscape analysis such as environmental assessments and natural- and visual-resource inventories; natural-resource protection, conservation, restoration, and/or reclamation plans.

Main Criteria for Judging Planning and Analysis:
1. Quality of planning and analysis;
2. Functionalism;
3. Relationship to context;
4. Environmental Responsibility;
5. Effective Use, presentation or programming of landscape architectural techniques;
6. Opportunities for landscape architecture to have a significant impact on the environment or environmental decision making;
7. Overall relevance to landscape architecture, the public and the environment.

Category IV.  RESEARCH
Category IV recognizes:
-Work of rigor and historical research that gives evidence of examination of a problem using accepted methods and arriving at supported and original findings or solutions of value to the profession.
-Entries in this category should show the use of directed inquiry comprising of the following:
1. Problem Statement: identification of problem to be researched;
2. Issues: statements identifying possible relationships to be investigated;
3. Procedure: Method of inquiry used;
4. Results: Report of results of the research, which may include an analysis (statistical or other);
5. Conclusions: Researcher's findings concerning significance of the results, their comparability with past research, their applicability to landscape architecture and the need for new or further research.

Main Criteria for Judging Research:
1. The clarity and adequacy of the five steps;
2. The work's overall significance and relevance to the profession;
3. Quality of presentation.

Category V.  COMMUNICATION
Category V recognizes:
-Design achievements in communicating landscape architectural information, technology, theory or practice to those within or outside the profession.
This category includes published or written documents, multimedia or electronic communications.
-Typical entries in this category may include: presentations on landscape architectural history, art or technology; educational material intended for the non-technical consumer; material that increases awareness of landscape architectural design, environmental or conservation issues; private or public marketing materials.
Main Criteria for Judging Communication
1. Quality of content and presentation;
2. Usefulness to the intended reader or viewer;
3. Overall significance and relevance to the profession, the public or the environment.

All categories require the following:

SUBMITTAL FORMAT
All submittals are required to be prepared in a Microsoft PowerPoint format and to be submitted on compact disk.  References to slides here after will refer to PowerPoint slides.

�Maximum number of slides - 20 total

�Remove authorship and/or all reference to the firm of individual�s name from the properties of the presentation

SLIDE #1
On slide #1 of the presentation, clearly state and summarize the following:
Project name and location.
Project purpose: list requirements, scope, philosophy and intent.

SLIDE #2
On slide #2 of the presentation, clearly state and summarize the following:
Role of the landscape architect/entrant vs. role of other participants, including owner/client and collaborators.

SLIDE #3
On slide #3 of the presentation, clearly state and summarize the following:
Special factors:  explain the project�s uniqueness and any unusual problems.
Significance:  briefly describe the project�s effect on public perception of the profession.  Explain how the project meets judging criteria for the category.

SLIDE #4
On slide #4 of the presentation, the entrant has the option of providing one page of text describing the project.  Entrant can replace this slide with a text and image slide (refer to Slide #5-#20).

SLIDE #5-20
On slide #5-#20 of the presentation, the entrant shall provide text and images describing the project.  The slides should include:
Images of Project(multiple images on each slide is acceptable)
Text describing Project(limit)

SLIDE DESCRIPTIONS (If Necessary)
At the discretion of the applicant prepare a one page description of each image slide in the presentation and enclose it with the project narrative described below. 

Remember; do not mention the firm, or individual�s name submitting the project!!

Your presentation should be all inclusive of your project.  The jurors will be reviewing each project by means of your slides and descriptive data only. 

PROJECT NARRATIVE
Provide a project narrative for the submittal.    The narrative will be used to present your project in the event that it wins an award.  The description is limited to 1 page and should cover the following aspects of the design:

PROJECT NAME AND LOCATION
PURPOSE OF PROJECT:  Describe the project�s requirements, scope, planning or design philosophy and design intent.
ROLE OF THE ENTRANT:  Describe the landscape architect/entrant�s role of leadership and involvement, role of the client, public, consultants, and/or subcontractors.
SIGNIFICANCE:  Explain the relationship of the project to its context or surroundings, particularly in regard to the entrant�s stewardship responsibilities. 
SPECIAL FACTORS:  Explain why the project is unique or special, plus any unusual problems, new techniques, or budgetary constraints you encountered.  Briefly describe the project�s effect on public perception of the profession.
This description shall be placed in an unsealed envelope, clearly marked �Project Narrative�.

** CATEGORY III Planning and Analysis submittals should include a copy of the planning document for reference.

PLEASE NOTE:  Entry form must be fully completed, including all signatures, for entry to be eligible for judging.

ASLA Member, Associate or Fellow:  $150.00
Professional Non-Member:  $250.00
Student ASLA Member:  $15.00
Student Non Member:  $25.00

Make checks payable to St. Louis Chapter ASLA and place within the �Concealed Data� envelope.  Additional certificates can be ordered for $75.00 each after the awards presentation.

ENTRY INSTRUCTIONS
Complete entry form in full, including signature of client/publisher acknowledging your entry.
Ensure anonymity on all materials except the entry form.
Identify project name on compact disk and insert into a plastic protector.
Print a copy of the PowerPoint presentation and place it in the envelope with the project narrative (color preferred).
Place entry form and entry fee in a separate opaque sealed envelope, clearly marked - �Concealed Data� - and place it inside of the envelope of the project narrative and disk with PowerPoint presentation.
Submit oversized planning, research and communications documents separately.  Do not submit any material not specifically requested. A PowerPoint presentation containing slides 1-3 as described above is required for these submittals.
