TWEETS

Join us  for a tour of the Longshadow Factory in Pomona, Illinois.

Saturday, October 2nd 10:00 AM

Charlotte and Daniel Ward of Longshadow have transformed their 123 acres into a rural factory set amidst an agrarian garden landscape. Don't miss this chance to see behind the scenes of a magical landscape that just happens to be a productive factory.

The Day's Program will include:

Lecture Presentation - 1 Continuing Education Unit
Tour of Factory and Grounds
Lunch provided by our hosts

HEAR the Presentation & SEE the Results:

Adaptive re-use of a previously neglected, abused and unwanted landscape,

Vegetative management and rejuvenation of a neglected site, and

Conserving a "Sense of Place" in the context of developing a rural factory within an agrarian garden landscape.

You will learn:

Organizing a re-use project:

  • Identifying site elements that should be preserved
  • Identifying site elements that require remedial steps
  • Preparing a short and long term plan for enhancements
  • Implementing enhancements
  • Remaining flexible

Vegetative management, without herbicides:

  • Identifying existing invasives and pursuing their control and removal
  • identifying returning native wildflowers and prairie plants and protecting their development
  • identifying and adding native and ornamental plants that can hold their own locally

Conserving a "Sense of Place" in a rural landscape:

  • the distinction between rural landscapes and industrial landscapes
  • preserving and building vernacular, local rural buildings instead of industrial buildings
  • developing and maintaining an entry that enhances and complements its locale
